About the role
We're looking for a hands-on finance generalist to run day-to-day finance operations and help build our finance function. This is not a forecasting or business-partnering role - it's for someone who genuinely enjoys the mechanics of accounting and wants to own the bookkeeping, close, payments, and other processes that keep a finance function running cleanly. You'll work closely with our VP Finance to define “how we do finance” here at ToU. You will also liaise closely with our external tax advisors who handle annual filings, while you own everything up to that point.
If you've worked in a big-corporate FP&A or business-partnering function and are looking to move into strategy or planning, this probably isn't the right fit. Read on and you'll see why!
Your main tasks
Accounting & Close (the core of the role) You'll own monthly, quarterly, and annual close for both entities - including the preparatory bookkeeping, AR/AP, intercompany bookings between the GmbH and gGmbH, bank reconciliations, and reporting packs for internal and external audiences. You'll apply HGB accounting principles day to day, and you'll be the point person coordinating with our external Steuerberater.
Invoicing, Collections & Payments You'll own day-to-day liquidity and the full cash cycle. You’ll send customer invoices, manage dunning and debt collection, run payment reconciliations, investigate failed-payment cases, and make sure revenue is recognized accurately under HGB. You’ll also process supplier invoices and expenses, prepare payment runs, coordinate with HR on payroll, and flag cash issues before they become problems.
Process & Systems Improvement You'll spot the manual, error-prone parts of the finance function and fix them - automation, reporting pipelines, better use of our tools (DATEV, Spendesk, easybill). If something could be an import/export or a dashboard instead of a spreadsheet someone re-does every month, you'll be the one who suggests and builds it.
Fundraising & Compliance Support You'll keep financial records and documentation audit-ready, support due diligence data rooms, and help navigate the compliance requirements that come with running a nonprofit entity (gGmbH) alongside a commercial one.
Management Reporting & Analysis You’ll support budgeting & forecasting by consolidating and maintaining single sources of truth for data across the company. You will have a chance to do some financial modeling and scenario planning, but this is not the main focus of the role.
Finance-Adjacent Projects You'll get exposure to debt financing, public grants, transfer pricing, intercompany governance, and legal/HR/operations as and when things come up.
What we're looking for
-
2–4 years of hands-on experience in accounting, bookkeeping, or finance operations - including preparatory bookkeeping (vorbereitende Buchhaltung) with solid technical knowledge of HGB
-
Practical experience with monthly/annual close, reconciliations, AR/AP, and payment runs
-
Comfortable working with finance tools such as DATEV, Spendesk/Moss, Stripe/easybill, plus everyday use of Google Sheets - this is not a financial-modeling-heavy role, so we're not looking for advanced scenario-modeling skills
-
Professional fluency in both German and English (required - German for external tax/banking/advisor communication, English for our international team)
-
A degree in business administration, economics, or a related field, or an equivalent professional qualification (e.g. Bilanzbuchhalter, Steuerberater, ACCA/ACA/CIMA)
-
Comfortable operating with ambiguity and building/improving processes in a fast-moving, resource-constrained environment (this is a lean team - no large finance department to lean on)
-
Bonus if you have experience with: multi-entity or intercompany bookkeeping, research grants funding, HubSpot, working in distributed/remote teams across multiple countries
