Academy Scientist (f/m/x) - Periodika & Korpora
(40 hours per week)
The department “Literary & Print Culture Studies” is dedicated to the exploration of literary and non-literary texts by means of Digital Humanities methods. A common goal of its research projects is the scholarly analysis, annotation, and public availability of a broad range of texts and resources. Following standardised parameters, these are systematically prepared in the form of openly accessible digital editions, corpora, databases, and research platforms.
The advertised position is located in the research focus area of “Periodicals & Corpora”, which is mainly dedicated to the exploration and study of digital newspapers and magazines: As Academy Scientist you have sound knowledge of press research and experience in procuring funding for and subsequently leading research projects. You have general technical competencies and are familiar with innovative concepts in the field of Digital Humanities, especially in the area of Print Culture Studies.
Your Tasks
Scientific research in the area of Print Culture Studies
Application of state-of-the-art methods on large newspaper and magazine corpora
Development and support of research proposals in this area
Development of workflows for the extraction, enrichment and transformation of data
Collaboration in the research department “Literary and Print Culture Studies“ at the ACDH
Participation in project meetings, congresses, conferences, symposia
Your Profile
Completed doctorate, preferably in Digital Humanities (or comparable subjects)
Proven research experience in the area of newspapers and magazines
Experience in securing funding and leading research projects
Good command of digital methods and tools in the Digital Humanities
Secure handling of modern developing tools (Git, Jupiter Notebooks, …)
Experience in working with large text corpora and AI applications
An international network in the area of newspaper and magazine research
Very good command of German, very good command of English
Ability to integrate into and work effectively within a team, independence, reliability, resilience, and flexibility

The initial gross monthly salary is at least EUR EUR 5.011,96 in accordance with the collective agreement for employees of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. A higher salary is negotiable depending on experience or academic qualification. The start of employment is planned for October 2026 and is limited to 5 years.
